SUMMARY:Ethics and Decision Making When Leading Volunteers
DESCRIPTION:We’ve all been there – you’re in a difficult situation with a volunteer and you don’t know what to do. Sometimes it’s just a situation where you can’t make everyone happy\, but sometimes you’re in an ethical dilemma – torn between two or more of the core values for leading and managing volunteers. How do you know if you’re in an ethical dilemma\, and what should you do to ensure that you make the right decision? Join Faiza Venzant\, CVA\, Executive Director for the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration and Jennifer Bennett\, CVA to learn about those core values and how to incorporate ethical decision making into your work. This highly interactive session will help you think through a real ethical dilemma faced by a leader of volunteers\, and practice the steps needed to implement this practice in your own work.

SUMMARY:Revisiting Maurice Mitchell's "Building Resilient Organizations"
DESCRIPTION:Maurice Mitchell’s seminal article “Building Resilient Organizations“—co-published in 2022 by NPQ\, The Forge\, and Convergence—held up a mirror to the challenging internal management and culture of progressive organizations and offered pointed guidance about what people working at these organizations could do to shift toward resilience and joy. It has been read and referenced by thousands of leaders\, consultants\, and funders in the three-plus years since. \nIn this Learn Out Loud session\, NPQ welcomes Maurice Mitchell and a panel of experts to revisit the central themes of the piece\, including anti-leadership attitudes; anti-institution sentiment; and unanchored care whereby people assume that one’s mental\, physical\, and spiritual health are the responsibility of the organization or collective space. \nThe panelists will address these questions: \n\nWhere have we seen progress in how our organizations function internally?\nWhat challenging organizational dynamics have proven more difficult to disrupt?\nHow has the deepening threat of fascism impacted the inner workings of our organizations?\nWhich tools and practices are contributing to greater organizational resilience in today’s hyperchallenging operating context?\nHow can philanthropy best support organizational resilience in our shared fight for a multiracial democracy?\n\nPanelists: \nMaurice Mitchell\, National Director\, Working Families Party\nAllison Conyers\, Executive Director\, EpicWorks\nMistinguette Smith\, Principal Consultant\, M Smith Consulting LLC\nRebecca Epstein\, Principal Consultant\, R. Epstein Consulting\nModerated by Jeanne Bell\, Program Host\, Leading Edge (NPQ)

SUMMARY:When the Unexpected Happens: Emergency Leadership Transition Planning for Nonprofits
DESCRIPTION:What happens when your executive director doesn’t come to work tomorrow? Too often\, boards are forced to improvise in the middle of a crisis are risking organizational stability\, staff morale\, and public trust. Leadership transitions are inevitable\, but emergencies rarely arrive on a schedule. Proactive boards treat emergency leadership planning as a core governance responsibility\, not an afterthought.\nThis session equips nonprofit board members and executives with a clear\, practical roadmap to prepare for sudden leadership changes. Drawing on real-world scenarios and tested governance strategies\, participants will learn how to: Build a simple\, actionable emergency transition plan. Define clear board and staff roles during a leadership crisis. Establish interim leadership and communication protocols that maintain stability. Integrate emergency planning into routine governance so the organization is never caught off guard. Attendees will receive adaptable templates and checklists they can bring to their next board meeting. By the end\, participants will be equipped to turn a potential leadership crisis into a moment of resilience\, clarity\, and continuity. \nPresenter: Dr. Jeff Aulgur
