Shelby Thomas is a Program Specialist for the OneStar AmeriCorps VISTA team. Her role supports the development and implementation of OneStar’s programs in the area of service and volunteerism, where she oversees the recruitment and outreach for the AmeriCorps VISTA Statewide Intermediary Project. Shelby was born in Houston, Texas and raised in Stafford, Texas. She received her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Geosciences with minors in Geology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from Texas A&M University. After graduation, she became a Disaster Recovery AmeriCorps VISTA who served for the Greater Houston Storm Recovery Network at Alliance of Community Assistance Ministries, Inc. Shelby helped the Greater Houston community recover from four major storms in 2015 and 2016. As a VISTA, she provided support through resource development, project management, network communication and data analysis for the GHSRN, a collaborative of over 30 non-profit, faith-based, local, state, and national organizations participating in long-term recovery. Her diligent work as a Disaster Recovery VISTA led her to become a recipient of the 2017 Governor’s Volunteer Awards. Her VISTA experience sparked a new interest in Disaster Recovery and Emergency Management, which led her to become a Program Specialist for OneStar’s Disaster Services team. Outside of work, she enjoys listening to music, dancing, volunteering, and nature.
